Key Identifying Characteristics
- Origin: Handcrafted by the Senufo people of northern Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
- Construction: Like the Mossi cloth, it is made of narrow, hand-woven cotton strips that are hand-stitched together to create a large canvas.
- Artistic Technique: These textiles are hand-painted using natural earth pigments and fermented mud dyes. The muted purple/blue background is often achieved through natural indigo or vegetable-based washes.
- Symbolism: Korhogo cloths are known as "painted stories." They feature stylized figurative motifs—in this case, human figures (one appearing in a traditional robe and another in a uniform-style garment)—which are used to represent community history, folklore, or spiritual protection.
